19 August 2021, Singapore - Formerly known as the Green Corridor Run, the PUB Green Run is making its return this year with a real purpose - to fund the rewilding of the Rail Corridor in support of Singapore's sustainability drive.

An annual 10km run between 2013 and 2016 that sold out each year attracting 12,000 runners at its peak, the run was subsequently stopped with the southern stretch of the corridor closed for the construction of an underground 22km-long water pipe (Murnane Pipeline), to meet future water demands in the city area.

Virtual Run for PUB Green Run 2021

Those taking part in the PUB Green Run will be able to do so virtually unlike mass participation runs in previous editions. Runners will also be able to run at a time and location of their choice, from 18 September to 31 October 2021.

Race Entitlements

All participants will receive a premium lightweight running cap, designed with breathable panels, a soft brim and natural tones, while all finishers are entitled to a finisher medal to celebrate their efforts.

What is the PUB Green Run?

The Rail Corridor is a 24km-long nature trail along the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway line connecting Singapore and Malaysia.

For this year's virtual run, in keeping with the theme of the PUB Green Run, participants are encouraged to run in open spaces and park connectors, including many of PUB’s picturesque reservoir parks.

They are required to record their run route and timing using the PUB Green Run mobile application.

As part of the run pack, participants will receive a premium running cap and a uniquely designed eco-friendly finisher's medal, featuring PUB's twin mascots Water Wally and Sally.

Running for a green cause

Not only will participants be enjoying a good run among nature, they would also be indirectly contributing towards overall efforts to go green, as for every for every person who signs up for the PUB Green Run, $10 will be donated to the Nature Society (Singapore), for its role in rewilding the Rail Corridor.

It is an attempt to enhance the natural habitat along the Rail Corridor, to improve its ecological connectivity and cool the area for recreational users.

Ben Williams, Director of PUB Green Run organiser Groundswell Events, said: "From the first moment I stepped onto the Rail Corridor, I was captivated by this unique stretch of greenery that cuts through the entire length of urbanised Singapore, mostly uninterrupted by roads."

He added: "As the years have passed, my appreciation for the Rail Corridor continued to grow and we are thrilled to support its rewilding by holding a virtual run."

His sentiments were echoed by Shawn Lum, President of the Nature Society (Singapore).

"By rewilding some stretches of the Rail Corridor and creating a continuous green canopy along it, we aim to enhance the conservation value of the corridor," shared Lum.

"The effort will also yield a cooler, greener experience for visitors as well as the rare native wildlife species that will travel along it."

PUB as Main Partner for the Event

PUB supported the popular running event during its 2015 and 2016 editions, back then known as the Green Corridor Run, which were held in conjunction with Singapore World Water Day to promote water conservation.

However, for the first time this year, PUB is coming on board as the PUB Green Run’s main partner.
