While it's a known fact that dribbling in basketball is a fundamental skill needed in any game, being able to beat a defender in tight spaces is especially important for offensive players during competition.

In anticipation of the Basketball 3x3 tournament for the ActiveSG Cup 2022, Singapore national basketballers Delvin Goh and Lim Jia Min shared with SportPlus some of the effective dribbling combos they have used from their years of experience competing in international matches.

Here are two of their favourite combos, broken down step-by-step.

Delvin's Dribbling Combo Move:

Step 1: Keep Your Body Low

Step 2: Execute a Crossover

Step 3: Between the Legs Dribble

Step 4: Behind the Back

Pro Tip: The key here is to keep your eye on the defender and make sure he or she commits to the direction you are feinting before going the other way. Once you have committed the defender, acceleration in the opposite direction is key to giving you those few extra yards in bringing the ball towards the rim.

Jia Min's Dribbling Combo Move:

Step 1: Read Defender's Shift

Step 2: Crossover in the opposite direction

Step 3: Explode forward once defender reacts

Step 4: Take your shot with the extra space created

Pro Tip: As simple as this dribbling combo move may sound, it has proven to be incredibly effective in most game scenarios. The key again is to keep your eye on the defender, and to read the direction in which they are moving. Once they have shifted their body weight in one direction, that is your cue to explode forward into space created to take your shot.

This is the first of an eight part basketball tutorial series for the ActiveSG Cup 2022, Basketball 3x3 tournament.
