The wait is officially over.
Nike has officially unveiled the Nike Alphafly 4, marking the next chapter in the brand’s flagship marathon racing franchise. Built from the ground up to address the physiological and biomechanical toll of late-race fatigue, the new iteration balances aggressive propulsion with enhanced stability and comfort—aiming to help both elite podium contenders and everyday runners chasing personal bests hold onto pace deep into the 26.2-mile distance.

Compared to its predecessor, the Alphafly 4 arrives 5% lighter (in a men’s US size 8.5) while delivering 10% greater energy return, establishing itself as the lightest and most responsive Alphafly produced to date.
Engineered for the Crucial Final Miles
Where previous supershoe iterations focused heavily on raw top-end speed, Nike’s design brief for the Alphafly 4 targeted the inevitable decay in running economy that occurs over the second half of a marathon.
“A marathon is dynamic. With Alphafly 4, we spent years listening to athletes, studying how fatigue impacts performance and running mechanics, refining every element of the system to help runners maintain efficiency when it matters most,” said Emily Farina, Senior Principal, Running Footwear at the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL). “Our goal was simple: create a shoe that helps athletes feel more confident and capable deep into the race.”
Already validated at the top tier of competitive road racing, the shoe carried Addisu Gobena to a course-record victory at the Sydney Marathon ahead of its official public debut.

Key Technical Upgrades: What’s Under the Hood?
Every core component of the Alphafly silhouette has been overhauled to function as an integrated, fatigue-resistant system:
-
New ZoomX LT Foam Midsole: Making its racing debut, ZoomX LT is up to 17% lighter than standard ZoomX foam and provides 8% higher energy return. Layered both above and below the carbon plate alongside standard ZoomX, it delivers a noticeably softer, bouncier underfoot ride designed to mitigate leg battering over long distances.
-
Dual Forefoot Air Zoom Units: The iconic twin Air pods return, specifically tuned to harmonize with the ZoomX LT foam and carbon plate for seamless transitions and responsive toe-off dynamics.
-
Full-Length Carbon-Fiber Flyplate: Retains the aggressive, propulsive scoop that defines the Alphafly geometry while stabilizing the ultra-plush stack height to ensure consistent cadence when stride mechanics begin to break down.
-
Refined Atomknit Upper: A fully seamless, breathable construction engineered with zoned midfoot cables, an integrated heel unit, and a molded sock liner to eliminate hot spots and secure the foot without restrictive pressure.
-
Fast Shot Outsole: A minimalist, lightweight rubber compound designed for targeted traction on road surfaces without adding unnecessary dead weight.

Athlete Insights and Heritage
The Alphafly legacy has been anchored by seminal distance running milestones, from Eliud Kipchoge’s historic sub-two-hour exhibition in Vienna and the late Kelvin Kiptum’s world record run to Sifan Hassan’s Olympic gold in Paris.
To develop the fourth iteration, Nike integrated extensive data from its Project Dreamweaver trials, women’s wear-testing cohorts, and NSRL motion-capture analysis. Feedback from both professional competitors and amateur test runners emphasized the need for a more forgiving, stable platform that doesn’t sacrifice race-day snap. Prototype testers have highlighted the noticeably softer landings and more accommodating midfoot hold over previous versions.
