The inaugural Kiprun Singapore race took an unexpected turn in the early hours of Sunday, September 27, as worsening haze conditions across the island prompted co-organisers Decathlon Singapore and MetaSport to make last-minute safety modifications to the race itinerary.
Following an overnight deterioration in air quality that pushed 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) levels firmly into the "Unhealthy" zone, organisers made the call to slash the marquee 21.1km half-marathon down to 10km. The late adjustment drew a wave of mixed reactions from the local running community, balancing appreciation for runner safety against frustration over missed race-day goals and entry fee differentials.

Midnight PSI Spikes Trigger Race Route Cutbacks
Air quality readings monitored by the National Environment Agency (NEA) steadily worsened heading into the weekend. By 2:00 AM on race morning—the scheduled cut-off review window for event management—the 24-hour PSI in Central Singapore had climbed to 126, while the East stood at 109 and the West registered 104.
With both the start line along Nicoll Highway and the finish village at Decathlon Singapore Lab in Kallang situated directly in the affected Central-Eastern corridor, organisers acted on predetermined safety thresholds.
To mitigate prolonged cardiovascular strain and airborne pollutant exposure, the flagship 21.1km category was truncated to a 10km loop. While flag-off times remained intact—seeing the modified 21.1km wave depart at 5:00 AM, followed by the original 10km at 6:00 AM, 5km at 7:00 AM, and the Kids Dash (670m) at 9:00 AM—the scenic perimeter covering Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and the Singapore Flyer had to be excised entirely.
In addition to the distance cut, organisers removed official rankings, effectively turning all divisions into non-competitive fun runs and cancelling the post-race podium awards ceremony.
"We know that many of you have invested significant time and effort in preparing for today, and we understand that these changes may be disappointing," Decathlon and MetaSport stated in a joint early morning release on Instagram. "We are equally disheartened and we thank you for your understanding and cooperation. These measures have been taken to reduce prolonged and strenuous physical exertion while still allowing participants to enjoy the event safely."

Financial fairness also emerged as a sticking point, with half-marathon slots priced between $78 and $98, compared to lower pricing tiers for shorter distances.

Under the event’s standard terms and conditions, registration fees remain non-refundable if formats are altered or cancelled due to force majeure events like transboundary haze. As of press time, organisers have not announced any goodwill compensation or partial credit mechanisms for affected 21.1km registrants.

By 7:00 AM, as thousands pushed through the humid Kallang loop, Central PSI crept further up to 128. For the inaugural Kiprun outing, the decision to compromise on mileage ensured participants still crossed the arch at Decathlon Singapore Lab safely—even if the milestone medal came with fewer kilometers underfoot than planned.
