Shanti Pereira Retains Asian Games 200m Crown in Nagoya: Full Team Singapore Day 4 Round-Up

NAGOYA, JAPAN — Shanti Pereira remains the undisputed sprint queen of Asia.

On Sunday night at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, Singapore’s premier track star mounted a masterclass in bend-running to successfully defend her women’s 200m Asian Games crown. Clocking a season’s best 22.78 seconds into a 0.2 m/s headwind, Pereira avenged her 100m silver from 48 hours earlier, beating China’s rising teenage talent Chen Yujie to the line.

The triumph delivers Pereira her second career Asian Games gold and her fourth medal overall at the continental showpiece, anchoring a landmark evening for Singapore athletics at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

The Margin, Exactly Reversed: How Pereira Won Gold

In Friday night’s 100m sprint, Chen Yujie claimed gold by exactly 0.15 seconds over Pereira. Over the half-lap distance on Sunday, the Singaporean repaid the favor by the exact same margin.

Reacting in 0.187s out of the blocks to Chen’s sharper 0.150s, Pereira made up crucial ground along the bend with aggressive stride cadence. Coming off the turn level with the 17-year-old, Pereira pulled away in the final 50 meters to post 22.78s. The time matches her season’s best set in Muscat earlier this month—this time achieved against a slight headwind.

Her national record (22.57s) and Damayanthi Dharsha’s Games record (22.48s, set in 1998) remain intact, but Pereira leaves Nagoya having firmly reaffirmed her continental supremacy.

Pereira’s gold headlined an action-packed Day 4 for Team Singapore track and field:

• Men’s 4x100m Relay Squeezes Into Final: The quartet of Xander Ann Ho, Ian Yu An Gan, Tate Fung Tan, and Mark Ren Lee shattered their season’s best with a 39.34s run in Heat 2. Entering Nagoya seeded outside the top eight, they advanced to Monday’s final as one of two fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

• Kampton Kam Hits Top-8 in High Jump: The 24-year-old cleared 2.10m to take 8th place overall, besting his pre-meet seeding by two spots. Fu Chao-hsuan of Chinese Taipei took gold on countback over India's Sarvesh Kushare Anil at 2.25m.

• Ang Chen Xiang Reacts Fastest in 110m Hurdles Final: After qualifying by just 0.001 seconds, Singapore’s national record holder exploded out of the blocks with a race-best 0.134s reaction time, crossing the line 7th in 13.90s (+0.8 m/s). China’s Chen Yuanjiang took the title in 13.15s.

• Women’s 4x100m Relay Sets Season Best: Amanda Loo Si Hui, Elizabeth-Ann Tan, Kerstin Ong Jing Rong, and Shanti Pereira lowered their season mark from 45.52s to 45.12s, finishing 4th in Heat 1. However, Bahrain and Korea took the available time-based qualifying slots.

• Thiruben Thana Rajan Battles 800m Heats: Battling back from recent illness, 800m national record holder Thiruben clocking 1:55.76 to finish 6th in Heat 3.

Continental Highlights: Puripol Boonson & Wu Yanni Light Up the Track

Beyond Team Singapore, Day 4 delivered major continental milestones:

• Puripol Boonson Equals Asian Record (19.88s): Thailand’s 20-year-old phenom secured a historic sprint double, clocking 19.88s into a -0.3 m/s headwind to tie Xie Zhenye’s 2019 continental mark. Boonson now leaves Nagoya having secured the 100m Games record and the 200m Asian record within 72 hours.

• Wu Yanni Grabs Hurdles Redemption: After a heartbreaking false start disqualification in Hangzhou three years ago, China’s Wu Yanni captured bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles (13.12s). Japan locked out the top two spots courtesy of Mako Fukube (12.74s) and Hitomi Nakajima (12.78s).
