The new era under English tactician Mark Jackson kicked off under the floodlights of Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday evening, with Lion City Sailors digging deep to earn a gritty 1-1 draw against Thai giants BG Pathum United in their AFC Champions League Two (ACL Two) Group F curtain-raiser.
With just forty-eight hours on the training ground alongside assistant Cameron Toshack, Jackson’s influence was immediately noticeable in the Sailors' high-energy, proactive setup. The hosts unsettled the visitors early, dictating tempo and crowding the midfield to blunt BG Pathum’s fluid buildup.

The early enterprise paid off in the 24th minute courtesy of Farhan Zulkifli’s relentless pressing down the right channel. After earning a set-piece, Dutch midfielder Giovanni Haag sent a wicked, dipping cross into the six-yard box. BG Pathum defender Marko Nikolić, under heavy pressure from the oncoming white shirts, inadvertently steered the ball past his own keeper, sending the Jalan Besar faithful into raptures.

The Thai League 1 contenders hit back five minutes after the interval. Pouncing on a loose turnover in midfield, Thai superstar Chanathip Songkrasin thread a precision through-ball into the path of Patrik Gustavsson, who slotted a clinical finish beyond Victor Aznar. Chanathip nearly turned the contest completely on its head minutes later, rattling Aznar’s crossbar with a trademark curling strike.
The Sailors weathered the storm and created late chances to steal all three points. Haag curled a free-kick inches wide, while Aznar pulled off a breathtaking fingertip save to deny substitute Raniel Santana from point-blank range. Late headers and half-chances from Diogo Costa, Shawal Anuar, and Ilhan Fandi failed to beat BG keeper Saranon Anuin, leaving the sides to share the spoils.

"Our intention will always be to win every home game," Coach Jackson reflected post-match. "I have been with the team for only two days and we’ve tried to implement lots of things. The boys showed fight, togetherness, and a willingness to learn. It’s clear we’ve got some of the top local and foreign players here, and it's my responsibility to utilise the entire squad."
Man of the Match Bart Ramselaar echoed his manager's sentiments: "The intensity has gone up a lot over the last few days. We were just missing something in the final third, but with work on the training pitch, I’m confident we will have a great season together."
