Singapore national team forward Ikhsan Fandi etched his name into the history books over the weekend, becoming the first-ever Singaporean footballer to score in the Japanese professional league.
Coming off the bench for Thespa Gunma in their J3 League clash against Reilac Shiga on Saturday (22 August), the 27-year-old striker showcased his trademark aerial prowess in the 89th minute, rising highest to bury a glancing header into the back of the net.
While the late strike could not prevent a 3-2 home defeat for Gunma, the milestone marks a monumental breakthrough for Singapore football on the East Asian stage.
Making His Mark in Japanese Football
Ikhsan joined Thespa Gunma in July after a prolific spell with Thai League 1 powerhouses BG Pathum United. Since arriving in Japan, the Singapore talisman has been steadily integrated into the squad, featuring as an impactful second-half substitute in each of Gunma’s opening three league fixtures.
His 89th-minute header against Reilac Shiga opens his competitive account in Japan and cements a new benchmark for Singaporean players plying their trade overseas.
