Cardiff City standout defender Perry Ng has officially received his Singapore citizenship, clearing the runway for the 30-year-old dynamic right-back to don the red of the Lions at the upcoming AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia this January.
The blockbuster announcement was delivered by Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Forrest Li during the FAS Annual Congress on September 27, marking an unprecedented milestone: Ng becomes the first foreign-born athlete with third-generation heritage to receive a Singapore passport under the Foreign Sports Talent scheme.
While fans tracking the ongoing FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia won’t see him just yet—the tournament squad roster was finalized prior to his clearance—his Kallang debut is already tantalizingly close.
Football fans could witness Ng run out at the National Stadium during the blockbuster November international window, where the Lions host South American stalwarts Paraguay on November 13 and five-time world champions Brazil on November 17.
Deep Roots and Red Passports
For Ng, putting on the Singapore kit isn’t just a career milestone; it is the culmination of an emotional, years-long pursuit to honour family roots.
Because Singapore’s citizenship by descent typically mandates at least one parent born locally or registered as a citizen, Ng’s path through his Singapore-born late grandfather required patience. After securing Permanent Residency in March 2025, his passion for the island never waned.

During every off-season and international break, Ng made the Lion City his second home—training alongside the national team, mentoring local youth prospects, and immersing himself in the local sports community.
His visits went far beyond the pitch. Ng routinely pays respects to his grandfather at a Bedok columbarium, volunteers with local charity initiatives, and plays unofficial food ambassador for visiting friends over plates of hawker centre chicken rice and fresh chee cheong fun.
His personal connection to the island became indelible this past June, when he successfully popped the question to fiancée Lucy Owen against the coastal backdrop of Sentosa.
