Not every training session needs a waterfront view. Some days, all you need is a lap you can count. Tucked off Yio Chu Kang Road on the edge of Serangoon Gardens, Serangoon Stadium is the northeast's neighbourhood track: a full-size oval wrapped around a grass football pitch, run by Sport Singapore and open from 4.30am to 9.30pm every day.
Whether you are chasing a faster 2.4 km for your IPPT, slotting in a midweek interval session after work, or easing back into running with a few gentle laps, this is a track that rewards the runners who keep showing up.

Training at Serangoon Stadium: Sessions That Work
A track takes the guesswork out of training. There are no traffic lights, no GPS drift and no hills to blame, just a lap that measures the same every single time.
1. The IPPT 2.4 km Time Trial
- The Session: Six laps of a standard 400 m track. Warm up with two easy laps and some strides, then run it as an honest time trial.
- The Tip: Run lap one slightly slower than you think you need to. Most failed attempts are lost in the first 400 m, not the last.
2. The Midweek Interval Set
- The Session: Six to eight repeats of 400 m at a hard but controlled effort, with an easy 200 m jog between each.
- The Experience: This is where the evenings come alive. You get exact splits and steady footing, and the after-work crowd keeps everyone honest.
3. Easy Laps and Comebacks
- The Session: 20 to 40 minutes of easy running, counting laps instead of watching the clock.
- Best For: Returning from injury or a break, where you want to stop the moment something niggles without being 5 km from home.
Practical Runner's Tips
- Beat the Heat: With gates open from 4.30am, early birds can get their session done well before the sun climbs. Evening sessions after 7pm are the other cool window.
- Share the Lanes: Keep the inner lanes for faster efforts, step off the track to rest or stretch, and run anticlockwise unless posted signs say otherwise.
- Plan Around the Squad: ActiveSG runs its invitation-only Athletics Development Centre for 10 to 18-year-olds here on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Expect company on the track at those times.
- Hiring for Groups: Coaches and groups who want to hire the track or field book it through ActiveSG.
- Check Before Key Sessions: ActiveSG posts closures on the stadium's facility page, so check it before a race-week session.
Getting There & Transit Logistics
- By MRT: Serangoon (NE12/CC13) is the closest station, about 750 m from the stadium as the crow flies, so allow 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Kovan (NE13) is a little further at about 1.2 km.
- By Bus:
- The S'goon Stadium stop on Boundary Road (63149) is served by 24, 76, 81, 82, 103 and 317.
- The S'goon Sports Cplx stop on Yio Chu Kang Link (63369) adds 43, 70, 104, 109, 116, 147 and 156.
