Every runner remembers their first proper track session: the white lines, the measured bends, the moment a 400 m lap suddenly feels a lot longer than it looks. In the shadow of the National Stadium, Home of Athletics (the former Kallang Practice Track) is where that moment happens for a lot of Singapore runners. It is a public track run by Sport Singapore, shared with the athletes who train there outside public hours.
Whether you are sharpening up for a 10K, testing your IPPT 2.4 km, or just want to run on a track that athletes train on, here is everything you need to know before you go.

Training at Home of Athletics: Sessions That Work
1. The Sunrise Session
- The Session: Gates open at 4.30am, so you can finish a full interval set of 400 m or 800 m repeats before most of the city is awake.
- Best For: Office workers who cannot make a weekday evening session here, because public hours end at 5pm from Monday to Saturday.
2. The Sunday Evening Long Intervals
- The Session: Sunday is the one day the track stays open to 9.30pm. Try 3 x 1,600 m at goal 10K pace with a 400 m jog between each.
- The Experience: A cooler evening, a quieter track and a proper measured lap make it one of the best weekly appointments in the city for a steady session.
3. The IPPT 2.4 km Test
- The Session: Six laps of a standard 400 m track. Warm up with two easy laps and a few strides, then run it as an honest time trial.
- The Tip: Hold back on lap one. A controlled opening 400 m almost always beats a heroic one.
Practical Runner's Tips
- Mind the Clock: From Monday to Saturday, public use ends at 5pm sharp, so plan weekday sessions for the morning.
- Plan Around the Squad: ActiveSG's invitation-only Athletics Development Centre for 10 to 18-year-olds trains here on Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, and on Saturday from 8.30am to 10.30am.
- Track Etiquette: ActiveSG's rules ask runners to go anticlockwise and overtake on the right. When field training is on, keep out of lanes 1 to 4.
- Weather Calls: In lightning or thunder, everyone has to leave open areas, so check the forecast before a key session.
- Check Before Race Week: The track closes for meets and events from time to time, and ActiveSG lists every closure on the facility page.
Getting There & Transit Logistics
- By MRT: Kallang (EW10) is the closest station, about 500 m from the track as the crow flies. Stadium (CC6) is a similar distance away, at about 560 m.
- By Bus: The stops on Nicoll Highway outside the National Stadium (80211 and 80219) are served by 10, 14, 16, 70 and 196. The Bef Geylang Rd stop on Sims Way (80111) adds 7, 11, 12, 31, 32, 33, 158 and 197.
