Queenstown Stadium

Long before the Sports Hub, there was Queenstown Stadium. Officially opened on 15 August 1970 by Lim Kim San, it hosted the National Day Parades of 1975 and 1983 and the Singapore Armed Forces' first Colours Parade in 1973. More than half a century on, it is still a working neighbourhood track, freshly resurfaced and reopened in August 2026.

Whether you are a Queenstown local with a lunchtime 5K to fit in, a history buff who wants to run where the parades marched, or a rugby player curious about the new pitch, here is your guide to Queenstown Stadium.

A Little History

Sport Singapore calls the Queenstown complex Singapore's first neighbourhood sports complex. The National Heritage Board's Queenstown heritage trail records that the stadium was officially opened on 15 August 1970, with a gallery for 3,000 spectators. The upgraded sport centre officially reopened on 8 August 2026, and more murals and heritage spaces are due from 2027.

Training at Queenstown Stadium: Sessions That Work

1. The Lunchtime 5K

  • The Session: Twelve and a half laps of the 400 m track. Keep it conversational and you will be back at your desk with time to spare.
  • Best For: One-north and Queenstown office workers who want a measured run with no road crossings.

2. The IPPT 2.4 km

  • The Session: Six laps of the track. Warm up with two easy laps and a few strides, then run it as an honest time trial.
  • The Tip: On a fresh surface it is tempting to fly off the line. Hold back for the first 400 m and finish strong.

3. The Heritage Cool-Down

  • The Session: After your run, walk a slow lap and look up at the stands. This is where National Day was celebrated twice.
  • The Experience: Few tracks in Singapore carry this much history, and it is worth a minute of your cool-down.

Practical Runner's Tips

  • Go Early or Late: The track is open from 4.30am to 9.30pm, so you can skip the midday heat.
  • Track Etiquette: ActiveSG's rules ask runners to go anticlockwise and overtake on the right. When field training is on, keep out of lanes 1 to 4.
  • Weather Calls: In lightning or thunder, everyone has to leave open areas.
  • Hiring for Groups: Any organised track and field activity needs a prior booking with ActiveSG.

Getting There & Transit Logistics

  • By MRT: Queenstown (EW19) is the closest station, about 450 m from the stadium as the crow flies. Commonwealth (EW20) is about 850 m away.
  • By Bus: The Aft Ch of Our Saviour stop on Commonwealth Avenue (11159) is served by 51, 111, 145, 186, 195 and 970. The Blk 153 stop on Mei Ling Street (11599) is served by 64.
